![]() ![]() manifold is it may or may not cause breathing problems. Depending on how badly "hogbacked" the e. 1 & 4 exhaust ports which implies that you can't get the exhaust manifold to line up properly with all 4 glands installed. You mentioned that you put glands in Nos. is correct also that it appears you have a warped exhaust manifold. This is pretty much what Bill Dodd suggested.īut Warren R. I think you need to check the gland height and compare it to the depth of the recesses in both the intake manifold and the engine block to make sure there is room enough to adequately "crush" the gasket (whether its the gland rings or a 3-in-one style. You will notice it most at high speeds and hard pulls.īy Warren Mortensen on Thursday, Ap02:01 pm: ![]() If your exhaust is blocked, the car will not "breathe" The exhaust will remain in the cylinder and will take in less intake, so that cylinder will not be working at maxumum efficiency. The new one has glands on all ports both intake and exhaust and rings on them. The exhaust was so warped that it was almost 1/3 blocked. I installed a new exhaust manifold on my 26 roadster a few years ago and now it has changed from the slowest car on tours to the fastest. The thick material compresses well when you tighten the manifold clamps.īy Norman T. The thicker material in the 3-in-one style helps to cover the gaps, since that little copper crush gland is very tiny, it usually can't perform well without the manifold ports in great shape, and the manifold straight and in great shape too. Sometimes I have fixed this by using the ring part only of the Ford gland and ring gasket, trimmed or ground thinner to fit into what remains of the port, then sandwich the thicker 3-in-one gasket over the ring between the bad port and/ or bad manifold. Ford 2 piece copper crush gland and ring gaskets to work is difficult. ![]() In those cases, unless you redo the motor and have the block re-surfaced on the manifold side or the ports rebored, getting the std. Sometimes worn or bend manifolds allow such leaks that the manifold port is eaten away by the exhaust gases. There are other fixes if you choose to play around with the available '3-in-one' type gaskets. I also found that someone had done some grinding on the #3 ex port and a bit of brass in that area so apperently some repair has been done on the block (which is original to the car) There is no way an alignment ring will fit into that port. If I understand what is being said here, although the intake and exhaust are seperate pieces, if the exhaust is warped downward slightly it puts pressure on the intake knocking it out of alignment?Īlthough the car has run for decades without using any steel alignment rings I decided to install them in the hopes of preventing future problems.oh well. Due to other issues with the exhaust manifold (packing nut thinks its part of the manifold) I can't easily remove the manifold from the car. I am using Langs 2 piece manifold gasket and alignment rings that are sold as a set. If you want to solve the problem completely and do it right - either have the exhaust manifold straightened or get a new one and then use the copper rings and alignment glands for a totally leak free system. "Try fit" the manifolds to the head with the alignment glands alone and if the mating surfaces of the manifold an head do not touch or at least almost touch - that is your problem. You either use rings and glands together or gaskets alone. If you use alignment "glands" along with gaskets rather than "copper rings", I think the alignment glands will bottom in the manifold and head before your gasket is tight enough to seal. You could have installed rings in all four ports if it was not warped.īy John F. This is messing you up with the intake manifold. Your exhaust is warped in the center I think. I am assuming the pilot ring is net seated right or is too tall.īy Warren F Rollins on Thursday, Ap08:07 am: Bite the bullet you will be pleased.Įxhaust? its the intake that seems to be leaking. I guess tomorrow after work I get to see what I did wrong. One of the simplest engines.īy Warren F Rollins on Wednesday, Ap11:02 pm: I sprayed some Kroil around the front intake port and the engine picked up a bit. Now my car runs well on the back 2, poorly on #2 and not at all on #1. My car had an annoying exhaust leak on #2 so I removed the 50 year old Victor exhaust gasket and installed a new currently made one and installed alignment rings into the intake and also #4 & #1 exhaust.
